Vistara receives new SIA exec. Read More »
Emily Cho has on June 10 resumed work at Hanjin, the family conglomerate she left in April 2018 after reports she threw water in the face of an advertising employee. Police later cleared her of charges.
The youngest child in late Chairman Cho’s family, Emily returned to the family business as a vice president looking after social responsibility within the corporate affairs portfolio. She is also tasked with new business developments at Hanjin, according to EDaily. Local media reported her return to the family business was stipulated in the will of her father.
Emily was previously a VP of Jin Air in addition to a position at Korean Air. She is credited for leading the overhaul of Korean Air’s marketing to make it modern and ride the Korean wave cultural movement. Her near-singlehanded marketing push overcame an establishment that favoured conservative and old-school marketing, former employees say.
Visatar’s new chief strategy officer is Vinod Kannan, a Singapore Airlines executive who has been seconded to Scoot as CCO. The TATA-SIA JV airline currently has a joint chief strategy and commercial officer, Sanjiv Kapoor who was formerly with SpiceJet. The job will be split with Kapoor continuing as CCO.
Kannan joined SIA in 2001 in marketing, was a GM in Indonesia and Italy, and then appointed VP in 2016. His experience at Scoot is seen as helping Vistara prepare for a two-fold change in strategy. The first is the long-planned move to long-haul flights. Second is the sudden acquisition of 737s in the wake of Jet Airways’ grounding. Vistara has flown A320s and has 787s on order.
