Korean Air (KAL) has added a fifth Vietnamese city to its passenger network with a twice-weekly 737-900ER service to the highland town of Da Lat, which is west of Nha Trang, an existing KAL destination.

The introductory service is scheduled through the northern summer season and is being run as a public charter, a spokesperson said this week. Da Lat has mostly served domestic flights in addition to scheduled Bangkok services and charters to Wuhan.

Korea is Vietnam’s largest visitor source after China. Koreans accounted for 24% of Vietnam’s visitor arrivals in the first five months of 2019, according to Vietnam tourism statistics.

A portion of Vietnam’s visitors arrive by road from neighboring Southeast Asian countries. If all Korean visitors to Vietnam arrived by air, they would represent 31% of all air passengers visiting the country.

From January 1 to May 31 this year, 1.8 million Koreans visited Vietnam compared with 2.1 million Chinese for the same months. Korean arrivals to Vietnam are up 22% this year while Chinese visitors were down by less than 1%. For full year 2018, 3.5 million Koreans (44% growth) and 5 million Chinese (24% growth) visited Vietnam.

KAL subsidiary, LCC Jin Air, serves Da Nang and Hanoi. KAL also serves Hanoi.
