In a further indication of its fast growth, on July 12 Bamboo Airways flew its millionth passenger since its launch on January 16. The privately-owned carrier’s expansion pace does not seem to have publicly irked the government, which owns major competitors, Vietnam Airlines and joint venture subsidiary, Jetstar Pacific.
Instead, the government celebrated Bamboo. The director general of the civil aviation authority of Vietnam, Dinh Viet Thang, said: “These are extremely impressive statistics for a new airline just six months in operation. Other Vietnamese airlines took a much longer time to achieve the figure of one million passengers.”
In comparison, VietJet flew its one millionth passenger 13 months after its first flight.
Separately, Bamboo Airways confirmed it is continuing to plan its European and intercontinental debut with the launch of Hanoi-Prague flights, with more details to be released later. Bamboo and Prague's Vaclav Havel International airport signed a MoU in April, but Bamboo has not commented on the subject since the signing.
AirAsia Group boss, Tony Fernandes, said in Prague this month that the city could be one of the first markets for the AirAsia brand when it resumes European flying. Thai AirAsia X is due to receive A330neos that will open European flights.
