Hong Kong Airlines (HKA) will grow frequencies to existing destinations, an indication the airline is re-gaining the trust of regulators. Hong Kong’s Transport and Housing Bureau (THB) is gradually easing restrictions that precluded the airline from adding flights. The measure was imposed after management changes, weak performance and public pressure on THB to have oversight.
The additional flights to existing destinations cover Haikou, Hangzhou and Sapporo. From September 2, there will be three daily flights to Haikou, the home of major shareholder HNA, which operates Haikou Meilan International Airport. From September 8, there will be four additional weekly flights to Hangzhou for a total of 14 weekly. From September 28, two additional Sapporo flights will give a weekly total of 11.
The increased frequencies utilise existing spare capacity as well as aircraft availability after HKA suspends its daily flight to Fuzhou from September 2. There will be further aircraft availability once Hong Kong Airlines suspends San Francisco service from October 5. HKA previously pulled down Australia and New Zealand flights to focus on North America. HKA says it remains committed to its two other North American destinations, Vancouver and Los Angeles.
