American Airlines (AA) is the last U.S. carrier to finalise its offering for newly awarded slots at Tokyo Haneda. Of the 25 slots Japan distributed, the U.S. received almost half – 12.
The U.S. granted AA two Haneda slots, one to be used from Los Angeles and one from Dallas/Fort Worth. The applications of United Airlines (UA) and Hawaiian Airlines stated if Haneda slots would be used for new flights or to replace an existing Narita flight. AA and Delta did not specify in their submissions how slots would be used.
AA will use both of its Haneda slots to replace existing Narita flights. Its Dallas-Narita 777-200 service will be up-gauged to a 777-300ER when moved to Haneda.
However, this seat increase is more than offset by AA’s plan to end three weekly flights from Chicago to Narita, terminating AA’s Asia network from Chicago. AA previously cut Chicago-Narita from daily to three weekly and cancelled China flights.
AA temporarily flew a -300ER from Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda, but will no longer use its largest aircraft on the route. Compared with two years ago, AA is reducing capacity and frequency to Japan.
