Japan’s two biggest airlines have announced distribution of their Tokyo Haneda slots. The largest allocation was for flights to the U.S. All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) each received six slots. Both carriers will use five slots to move existing U.S. flights from Tokyo Narita to Tokyo Haneda, generating no new capacity.
ANA will utilise one slot for a new flight to San Francisco and JAL will launch a service to Los Angeles, also using one slot. The changes are effective from March 2020. In March 2021, JAL will take up the Tokyo Narita-Chicago route cancelled by its joint venture partner, American Airlines (AA).
ANA is using all of its U.S. slots to serve continental U.S., whereas JAL will use two of its six slots for Honolulu. ANA’s joint venture partner, United Airlines (UA), received three slots from the U.S. allocation for some of the biggest markets: Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. ANA is mostly using its Haneda slots for smaller markets such as San Jose.
AA received two slots, Dallas and Los Angeles. So JAL’s allocation is focused on large markets like New York and Chicago. JAL’s smaller U.S. destinations – San Diego and Boston – will not be switched to Haneda.
