Southern Chinese city had expected Ethiopian would be its first non-Asian airline. Read More »

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has approved two new intercontinental airlines for Shenzhen: Lufthansa with a three a week flight from Munich and Egypt Air with a twice a week service from Cairo.

CAAC approval does not mean airlines will necessarily operate the flights, but most do eventuate. The CAAC’s circular did not specify equipment or when the services would begin.

The southern Chinese city has ambitious aviation goals that include attracting a non-Asian airline to its airport. Intercontinental demand for Shenzhen goes through the neighbouring cities of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, or via another mainland or Asian hub. All Nippon Airways plans to start its first service to Shenzhen next year and Vietnam Airlines added its first route to Shenzhen in November.

Shenzhen has long-haul flights operated by Chinese airlines but it has no intercontinental passenger airline. Ethiopian Airlines has discussed adding Shenzhen to its network as part of a wider expansion in China, but it is not known if it has received approval for a Shenzhen flight.
