All Nippon Airways (ANA) said this week it had put pen to paper for up to 20 new 787s that will be powered by GE Aviation GEnx-1B engines. Read More »

The commitment comprised a firm order for 11 787-10s and four 787-9s as well as options for five more 787-9s, ANA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Star Alliance member said the 787-10s would be delivered between 2022 and 2024 and be flown on domestic routes. The 787-9s are due to arrive in the fleet between 2024 and 2025 and have been earmarked for international services.

"Boeing's 787s have served ANA with distinction and we are proud to expand our fleet by adding more of these technologically advanced aircraft," ANA executive vice president, Yutaka Ito, said in a statement.

"These planes represent a significant step forward for ANA as we work to make our entire fleet more eco-friendly and to reduce noise output.

“Introducing the 787-10 on the domestic routes will help ANA Group maintain its leadership role and improve our ability to operate as a responsible corporate citizen."

The ANA 787 fleet comprises 36 787-8s, 33 787-9s and two 787-10s. These aircraft, as well as another 12 to be delivered from previous orders, were powered by Rolls-Royce Trent engines.

Asked about the decision to switch engines, an ANA spokesperson told Reuters news agency that as the 787 became a larger component of its fleet, the airline wanted to "diversify some of the components to minimise single source risks".

In May 2019, Air NZ chose GEnx-1B engines when it ordered eight 787-10s, with options for 12 more of the type, switching from the Rolls-Royce Trent engines that power the airline's existing 787-9 fleet.

Boeing said it was the sixth time ANA had ordered 787 aircraft. It was the launch customer for the type in 2011.

The latest order will increase ANA’s 787 fleet to more than 100 of the type.
