September 20th 2021
Shanghai's China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will boost its presence in southern China's Hainan by adding 50 aircraft to a new base on the island as part of global connection to an “air silk road”. Read More »
The airline said the expansion will enhance the global accessibility of passenger and cargo transportation in Hainan and “vigorously promote the rapid development of free trade port-related industries”.
It did not reveal the type of aircraft to be stationed at the new base. The statement indicated the airline plans to connect Hainan’s capital, Haikou, with the island's southern city of Sanya via a boutique express service as well as integrate the Hainan unit “more forcefully” with China Eastern’s global network of 170 countries and 1036 destinations. CEA said it had viewed Hainan as an important part of its “new era market map” in recent years and had serviced all three of the island’s civilian airports with passenger traffic reaching almost 3 million in 2019.
