Global aviation sector rallies behind 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal
October 6th 2021
Airports, manufacturers and air navigation service providers have rallied behind the push to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Read More » A declaration signed by 15 key aviation industry organisations including the Airports Council International World (ACI World), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), airframe manufacturers, engine makers and component companies pledged global civil aviation operations would achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through “accelerated efficiency measures, energy transition and innovation across the aviation sector and in partnership with governments around the world”. The declaration, facilitated by the Air Transport Action Group, comes after the International Air Transport Association annual general meeting in Boston this week committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. “The road ahead will be challenging but aviation is no stranger to challenges,’’ said ACI World director general, Luis Felipe de Oliveira. “This historic declaration shows the determination of the sector to work together to take this important climate action.” The ACI chief said it was imperative governments supported the efforts to make the sector sustainable. “This makes it all the more urgent that member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) support the adoption of a long-term climate goal at the 41st ICAO Assembly in 2022,” he said. The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines, which committed to a net zero target in September, welcomed the declaration. “A comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders to deliver emissions reductions is critical to achieving a fully sustainable aviation industry by 2050,’’ AAPA director-general, Subhas Menon, said.
