Strong demand helped Hong Kong International Airport report a double digit rise in cargo traffic in September as passenger numbers also increased. Read More » Cargo throughput improved 17.9%, to 455,000 tonnes compared with September a year ago. The double digit growth was a result of both imports and exports, with North America and Southeast Asia experiencing the most significant increases. Passenger numbers rose by 127.4% off an extremely low base, to 227,000 for the month. Flight movements were up 32%, to 13,920. The passenger count translated to an average of about 7,000 travellers a day or about 5% of the pre-pandemic level in September 2019. Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AA) has launched a blockchain enabled platform, the HKIA Cargo Data Platform, to improve operations such as shipment traceability, communications, information exchange and work flow. “As a smart airport, the AA took an innovative step to develop a common data platform to drive the community-wide digitalisation collaboration,’’ AA executive director commercial, Cissy Chan, said. “The successful launch of the platform signifies a more cohesive industry ecosystem aiming to create differentiating benefits for the Hong Kong air cargo community, thereby further consolidating HKIA’s status as a leading international cargo hub.”
