Australian aviation breaks free from shackles of COVID-19 restrictions
Australia is shaking off the torpor of lockdown as domestic airlines launch competing fare sales and international travel starts the long march back to normality. Read More » Domestic airlines, Virgin Australia (VA) and Regional Express (REX), launched competing fare sales on Monday that axed traditional holiday season blackouts as they capitalise on opening borders over the traditional holiday peak. International carriers also are returning, opening up seats or increasing capacity after Victoria joined New South Wales in announcing eased restrictions on overseas travel for vaccinated Australian citizens, residents and their families. VA unveiled what it described as one of its biggest sales on record with 1.7 million fares starting at A$49 one-way (US$US36.60). The promotion covers travel from November 1 to June 23 and applies to 28 domestic and international destinations, including Fiji, Bali and New Zealand. Singapore-backed REX earlier announced plans to reinstate suspended services on key New South Wales regional routes from November 15. It offered a range of sale fares from A$99 one way and, unusually for Australia, no Christmas blackout. The international rollout began last week in Sydney and was expanded on Friday when Qantas said it would bring forward the return of international flights from Melbourne. The latest announcement was in response to a Victorian Government decision to remove quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated customers returning from overseas from November. The Australian carrier’s Melbourne-London flights will now resume six weeks earlier than planned on November 6, starting with two flights a week and ramping up to a daily operations from December 18. Three times a week Melbourne-Singapore flights will now start on November 22 and will increase to daily services from December 18. Singapore Airlines also opened sales to eligible flyers on its 14 weekly flights between Singapore and Melbourne for travel from November 1. In other signs of renewed life, Hawaiian Airlines will resume its five times weekly Sydney-Honolulu service from December 13. The U.S. carrier suspended the route in March last year due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
