Thailand reopens to more than 60 countries

Thousands of tourists are expected to give Thailand and the airlines carrying them welcome economic relief after quarantine was dropped today for travellers from more than 60 countries. Read More » Thai media reported optimistic projections from tourism operators on the resort island of Phuket that more than one million people will arrive in the first quarter of next year. The Bangkok Post said 825 international flights operated by 17 airlines were expected to arrive in Phuket this month, up from 562 flights from 11 airlines last month. However, a survey by Thailand’s Department of Health found nine out of 10 Thais remained worried the reopening will lead to a new outbreak of the pandemic. Thailand recorded 8,859 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday with 47 deaths. Pre=pandemic, the country welcomed about 40 million tourists a year, powering a sector that accounted for 20% of the nation’s economy. Authorities expect up to 15 million visitors next year with revenues predicted to return to 2019 levels in 2023.
