In what may be a shot across the bow of proposed Australian low-cost carrier airline, Bonza, QantasLink is linking key wine producing areas in New South Wales and South Australia using Embraer EI90 jets. Read More » The E190s were introduced to the Qantas Airways unit’s network in May as part of the airline’s agreement with Alliance Airlines, which has been increasing its fleet of the 94-seat jets. QantasLink noted the size, range and economics of the E190 had opened up “a number of new routes that would not have been viable with Qantas’ existing fleet”. Three weekly flights will connect Newcastle, the home of the Hunter Valley wine region, with South Australian capital, Adelaide, from March 28, saving more than two hours compared with flying via Sydney. It is the type of route Bonza has indicated it wants to target when it starts operations towards the middle of next year. QantasLink also announced it would start flying between the New South Wales regional town of Wagga Wagga and Brisbane from the same date using Q400 turboprop aircraft three times a week.
