Fiji Airways has announced the promotion of the first woman to command a widebody aircraft in its 70-year history. Read More » Captain Seini Koroitamana Cornish was certified to captain Fiji Airways A330-300 and A330-200 types after starting the qualification process in March. The intensive training included simulator sessions at the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy and ‘line’ checks over 18 sectors on the airline’s A330s. She has been flying for the Fijian carrier for 16 years, starting in 2005 as a second officer on 747-400s. She progressed to first officer on 737s, 767s and A330s. “Progressing any Fijian into a command position of any aircraft is special but having our first female captain of a wide-body aircraft is historic and remarkable,’’ said Fiji Airways CEO, Andre Viljoen. “Captain Seini Koroitamana Cornish’s promotion to A330 command is a trailblazing achievement for women in aviation, not just in Fiji but in the South Pacific. Already a highly accomplished pilot, Captain Seini continues to shatter the glass ceiling.”
