Air New Zealand (Air NZ) has blamed continuing border uncertainty for the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights to Australia to December 31. Read More » The airline estimates about 20,000 customers will be affected by the decision, made after the New Zealand government said it is unlikely to restart quarantine-free travel with Australia this year. "This will be particularly tough news for families and friends who were hoping to catch up over Christmas,’’ said Air NZ chief customer and sales officer, Leanne Geraghty. “ I appreciate how difficult this news will be, but our hands are tied until border restrictions ease and we receive further clarity from the New Zealand Government." Air NZ customers have begun moving their bookings into credit and the airline was trying to give them as much certainty as possible, she said. Affected customers can opt to hold their fare in credit for travel at another date or receive a refund if they have purchased a refundable ticket. "We appreciate this latest news means some customers will have to wait longer before reuniting with loved ones,’’ Geraghty said. “We are continuing to do everything we can to get them home safely and as quickly as possible." Air NZ is keeping its schedule in place beyond December 31 until it receives an update from the New Zealand government on travel restrictions. It is operating a reduced schedule of flights into Sydney and Melbourne and “red flights” from Australia to New Zealand for those with quarantine accommodation.
