Vietnam Airlines is set to commence the first regularly scheduled services to the U.S. by a Vietnamese carrier in some two decades after laying the groundwork for the route. Read More » The carrier officially received its permit to operate the direct flights on November 16 and plans to fly two direct round trip flights a week between Ho Chi Minh City and San Francisco from Sunday either with 787s or A350s. The launch will come some 20 years after Vietnam Airlines established a representative office in the U.S. to prepare the groundwork for the direct flights, according to a post on the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam’s (CAAV) website. The first flight is expected to depart on Sunday evening and take just under 14 hours to reach San Francisco. The return flight will depart on Monday night and land in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday morning after a 16 hour-40 minute journey. The CAAV post said the airline plans to increase the frequency of the service to seven flights a week after the COVID-19 outbreak is brought under control and the Vietnamese government allows the reopening of regular international routes.
