Air New Zealand (AirNZ) is preparing for 12,000 customers to fly into and out of Auckland today after New Zealand’s biggest city ends 120 days of COVID-19 border restrictions. Read More » The airline will operate 170 flights to and from the city after almost four months without domestic travel. “Tomorrow also marks the start of a very busy summer period, with more than 720,000 customers booked to fly around New Zealand from December 15 to January 31,’’ AirNZ customer chief customer and sales officer, Leanne Geraghty, said. Aviation data specialist, OAG, estimates New Zealand is experiencing a 72% increase in week-on-week capacity, mostly in the domestic market. “In comparison, the increase in capacity across Australia of more than 33% may seem minor, but in volume terms 317,000 extra domestic seats [in Australia] is more than the 118,000 seats added back into the network by New Zealand. It places Australia in 18th position in the global chart,’’ OAG said.
