December 16th 2021
Qantas is returning to Rome after almost two decades with three a week flights from Sydney via Perth due to start on a seasonal basis from June 2022. Read More » The airline will use 787s to fly to the eternal city, operating the only direct flights from Australia to continental Europe and cutting three hours off alternative travel times. The airline said passengers could combine the Rome service with its twice-daily London flights on the same ticket. “We have seen amazing demand on our direct service from Perth to London and on our new services to Delhi from Melbourne and Sydney,’’ said Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce. “These are exciting destinations. There is strong evidence the pandemic is making non-stop flights between Australia and the rest of world even more desirable as we learn to live with the virus and its variants. Italy is the largest market for us in continental Europe for people visiting family and friends from Australia. We think customers will love flying direct to one of the world’s great cities to spend time with loved ones or enjoy Italy.” Qantas dropped its service to Rome in 2003 as part of a 20% reduction in international flying in response to the SARS epidemic. It replaced the flights with a codeshare agreement with Cathay Pacific Airways.
