U.S. suspends scores of flights from China-based airlines
January 24th 2022
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) has suspended 44 passenger flights from China-based airlines from late January to March in response to the Civil Aviation Administration of China's (CAAC) "circuit-breaker" actions against U.S.-based carriers. Read More » The 44 flights are nine operated by Air China (five from Los Angeles to Shenzhen and four from Los Angeles to Tianjin), 16 China Eastern Airlines services from Los Angeles to Shanghai Pudong, six China Southern Airlines flights between Los Angeles and Guangzhou and 13 Xiamen Airlines Los Angeles to Xiamen routes. The DoT order said U.S. carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines had been subject to 19 circuit breaker actions since December 31. At January 19, 44 of the trio's scheduled passenger flights had been suspended. "We find the CAAC’s recent actions impairing the operations of Delta, American and United as described above are adverse to the public interest and warrant proportionate remedial action by the department," the DoT said. "U.S. carriers, who are following all relevant Chinese regulations with respect to pre-departure and inflight protocols, should not be penalised if passengers, post-arrival, later test positive for COVID-19." The order noted the U.S. had repeatedly raised its objections with China about the “circuit breaker” measure and its inconsistency with the provisions of the air transport agreement between the two countries.
