Airline optimism dampened by Omicron and unrelenting cost pressures: IATA

The number of airline executives expecting a better bottom line in the period ahead has fallen amid fresh worries about the impact of the COVID-19 Omicron variant and cost pressures on their operations, figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show. Read More » The January 2022 IATA airline business confidence index said 59% of airline chief financial officers and heads of cargo expected profits to rise or improve, down from 74% in its October 2021 monitor. "The survey suggests the bottom line figures will continue to improve, although optimism is somewhat weaker compared with Q3," the airline lobby group's report said. "Carriers mentioned concerns about the impact of the Omicron variant on travel demand, higher jet fuel prices and pressure on yields due to increased competition," IATA said.
