Guangzhou Airport dropped from top of the ACI World's busiest airport table in 2020 to eighth position in 2021

Two airports in the Asia-Pacific - both in China – were among the top 10 airports in the world in 2021, figures from Airports Council International (ACI) World show. Read More » But Guangzhou Bai Yun International Airport dropped from first place in 2020 to eighth in 2021. ACI World said 40.3 million passengers were processed at the southern china airport in 2021, down 8% from the 43.8 million travellers the airport served in 2020. Chengdu lost its 2020 runner-up place after it recorded a passenger decline of 1.5%, to 40.1 million passengers in 2021, from 40.7 million travellers using the airport in the previous year. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport was the busiest airport by passenger numbers last year, with 75.7 million passengers, up 76.4% from 42.9 million travellers a year earlier. “The ACI World passenger traffic rankings tell the story of an encouraging trend of recovery with most of the recurrent busiest airports pre-COVID-19 back at the top,” ACI World director general, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, said. “Although we are cautious that recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by the reopening of countries could lead to an uptick in travel in the second half of 2022.”
