Pilot exodus at Hong Kong Airlines

At least 35 pilots from the Hong Kong Airlines have resigned in the last six months, reported the South China Morning Post, because they were dissatisfied with the airline’s conditions of service, including being asked to fly more hours per day than stipulated by the Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong regulations. Other concerns are lack of a commuting roster and the airline’s alleged warning that pilots will lsoe bonuses and/face punishment if they go public about issues that are ultimately a threat to passesnger safety.
Hong Kong Airlines has been in the headlines frequently since its launch in 2006, mostly for the wrong reasons. It has made “deviations from safety regulations” seven times in August and September alone last year. In 2008, a Hong Kong Airlines plane attempted to take off from one of Hong Kong International Airport’s taxiways.
