Qantas Group engineers to vote on protected industrial action
July 7th 2022
The union representing Qantas Group engineers, the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), will conduct a ballot of members to determine if they wish to take protected industrial action as part of the union’s negotiations for a new work contract with the airline group. Read More » Potential industrial action could include work stoppages of up to 12 hours and an overtime ban. The ballot will take four weeks to conduct. “It is unfortunate we must take this step,” ALAEA federal secretary, Steve Purvinas, said. “Our members have endured stand downs, and in most cases years since a wage increase.” Qantas Group said on its website it had contingency plans in place to minimise any disruptions. “This action from the union is completely unnecessary,” the airline company said. “The latest claim by the ALAEA is a one-year agreement with a 12% pay rise for Qantas engineers. That’s something we simply can’t afford and it is well above wage increases for other employees across the group.”
