The head of Qantas has proven to be an unpopular figure in Australia. In a series of focus groups conducted in Sydney, one of the participants said each of the eight people in his group agreed “Joyce and his team have ruined Qantas for their own ends” and “Qantas needs to heal the rift between its staff and management to gain more confidence and thus more patronage from the public.”
Other claims allude to Joyce actively ruining Qantas for Jetstar.
In an opinion piece, the Sydney daily also offered that Joyce has earned a total A$22.2 million (US$20.8 million) as Qantas’ top man since he came onboard in 2009. His FY2012-13 A$5.1 million package “matches the combined salaries of the Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines chiefs.”
