The Airbus A320neo has been performing better than anticipated in the latest performance tests, says Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, John Leahy. Read More »

Airbus predicts the aircraft will burn 20% less fuel per seat than the current A320, compared to an earlier target of 15%. The extra 5% stems from a higher passenger number, 189 versus 180 with the Space Flex design that rearranges the rear galley, as well as a performance improvement package from Pratt & Whitney.

The manufacturer’s A319neo and A321neo are predicted to save 19% and 23%, respectively, over their predecessors.

The update was part of the Airbus Airliner Market Outlook in which the European planemaker forecast 22,000 new single-aisle aircraft will be needed through 2033. Demand in China and India for domestic flying will help drive 37% of these deliveries to Asia-Pacific airlines, Airbus said.

Based on Airbus’ current orderbook, AirAsia Group is the biggest buyer of the A320neo with 264 firm orders, followed by IndiGo’s 130 purchase commitments and Lion Air’s 109. China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, part of the mainland’s “Big Three”, have signed up for 70 and 50 aircraft, respectively.
