Korean Air supports entry of another airline on London-Seoul to secure UK approval for Asiana Airlines takeover
December 12th 2022
Korean Air (KAL) will facilitate the entry of Virgin Atlantic (VA) between London Heathrow and Seoul Incheon to win approval for its proposed Asiana Airlines merger from the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Read More » Undertakings include making slots available at Heathrow and Incheon and entering into other potential related arrangements to allow VA, or one or more alternate carriers, to service the route. In November, the CMA had raised concerns that the proposed tie-up will result in substantially reduced competition on passenger flights between London and Seoul and Europe-South Korea cargo services. It asked KAL to address its concerns. The CMA said KAL remedies were appropriate to remedy, mitigate or prevent the competition concerns it had identified in November. Interested parties have until December 23 to comment on the draft ruling.
