The deep-sea hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) B777 resumed in a remote stretch of the southern Indian Ocean as the first of three search ships began sonar sweeps of the ocean floor. Read More »

The ship GO Phoenix marks the start of a rebooted search after experts from around the world spent the past few months carefully mapping the deep crevasses, undersea mountains and volcanoes that dot the sea floor about 1,800 miles west south-west of Australia.

The GO Phoenix, as well as the other two ships joining from October 17, is deploying a delicate sonar device known as a towfish that is pulled along 100 meters above the sea bed.

The decision to focus the search on this 60,000 km2 area – roughly the size of Tasmania – suggests investigators have concluded flight MH370 went faster and flew further than projected by many earlier analyses.
