U.S. extends waivers for China and Tokyo Haneda routes

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted a request from lobby group, Airlines for America, to extend waivers for the “use it or lose it” rule on Tokyo Haneda and Mainland China routes. Read More » The extension will apply until October 28 this year; which is the final day of the northern hemisphere summer scheduling season. “We find that during the forthcoming summer season it will continue to serve the public interest to afford air carriers flexibility to begin or resume international services at these points as permitted by foreign government authorities and as market conditions warrant, without risk they will lose their route or frequency awards for non-use,” the DOT order dated February 17 wrote. The order said A4A described international flight operations and passenger demand in those markets as “severely depressed”.
