IATA issues early designation code to under construction western Sydney airport

Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird Walton) Airport has been allocated airport designation WSI by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), more than three years before the airport’s planned start of operations, in late 2026, and much earlier than the airline lobby group's usual practice of designating a new airport’s code about 12 months before flights commence. Read More » The airport said Australia's Qantas Group and Virgin Australia were among advocates who wrote to IATA requesting early designation. We have had enormous levels of interest from airlines, not only from our Australian airline partners, but from airlines worldwide excited by this new aviation capacity, 24/7 operations and modern, digitally enabled infrastructure, as well as the potential it offers to enhance Sydney’s brand as Australia’s global city, Western Sydney International Airport chair, Paul O'Sullivan, said.
