Qantas Airways facing legal action over flight cancellation policy during the pandemic
September 1st 2023
Australia's competition regulator has launched legal action against Qantas Airways in the Federal Court of Australia, alleging the airline engaged in false, misleading or deceptive conduct by advertising tickets for more than 8,000 flights it had cancelled but had not removed from sale. Read More » Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chair, Gina Cass-Gottlieb, said the legal action was a result of a detailed investigation into the airline’s flight cancellation practices that identified the airline cancelled about 15,000 out of 66,000 domestic and international flights in May to July 2022. “We allege Qantas’s conduct of continuing to sell tickets for cancelled flights and not updating ticket-holders about cancelled flights, left customers with less time to make alternative arrangements and may have led to them paying higher prices to fly at a particular time not knowing that flight already had been cancelled,” Cass-Gottlieb said. Qantas said it will examine the details of the ACCC allegations and respond to them in full in court.
