Qantas Group reports former CEO paid US$14 million in fiscal 2022-2023

Qantas Group disclosed on September 20 that former group CEO, Alan Joyce, was paid A$21.4 million (US$14 million) in the 12 months to June 30, his last full year in the role before stepping down earlier this month. Qantas Group chair, Richard Goyder, said A$2.2 million of Joyce's short-term bonus had been withheld and A$8.3 million was “subject to clawback should the board determine that necessary”. In recent weeks, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission accused the airline of selling tickets for flights already cancelled and Australia's highest court upheld a lower court ruling that the Qantas decision to outsource 1,700 ground handling positions was illegal. Qantas also has been the subject of fierce criticism for delayed flights, high airfares and poor customer service. “The company is experiencing an acute loss of trust in the community and accumulated disappointment from customers, which the board and management are determined to fix,” Goyder said.
