Delta cancels planned Portland-Tokyo Haneda route
September 25th 2023
Delta Air Lines has cancelled plans to operate nonstop flights between Portland on the U.S. west coast and Tokyo Haneda airport and handed the slot pair back to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Read More » The Portland-Haneda route was one of five slot pairs Delta received in 2019 when the DOT awarded 12 news slots to Tokyo Haneda to U.S. carriers. While Delta was originally scheduled to launch the route in March 2020, the service did not commence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The DOT had granted airlines a "dormancy waiver" allowing them to keep their slots during the pandemic. The dormancy waiver is due to end of October 29 2023. Delta applied to the DOT to keep the Portland slot and use it on a different U.S.-Haneda route. The DOT rejected this request. "Delta hereby notifies the Department that it will not launch Portland (PDX) to Tokyo Haneda (HND) flights by the October 29, 2023 deadline specified in the Dormancy Order and, consequently, returns the daily PDX-HND slot pair allocated to Delta by Order 2019-8-6 to the Department," the SkyTeam alliance member said in a regulatory filing. "Delta plans to resume all other U.S.-Haneda flying by October 29, 2023, consistent with its prior awards."
