Qantas flags US$128 million increase in fuel bill for 2023/24
September 26th 2023
Qantas Group said it may have to raise airfares should fuel costs remain at current elevated levels. Read More » The airline group said in a regulatory filing its fuel bill was expected to increase by A$200 million (US$128 million) to A$2.8 billion in the first half of 2023/24, compared with the prior corresponding half, as higher refiner margins and a lower Australian dollar pushed up the cost of jet fuel. "The Group will continue to absorb these higher costs, but will monitor fuel prices in the weeks ahead and, if current levels are sustained, will look to adjust its settings," Qantas said in a regulatory filing. "Any changes would look to balance the recovery of higher costs with the importance of affordable travel in an environment where fares are already elevated." Qantas said it had earmarked a further A$80 million, on top of a previously announced A$150 million, to address customer "pain points" such as call centres waiting times and frequent flyer seat redemptions, as well as more generous recovery support and inflight catering.
