United keen to pick up more Tokyo Haneda slots
September 27th 2023
United Airlines has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to pick up takeoff and landing slots to Tokyo Haneda Airport recently handed back by Delta Air Lines. Read More » The Star Alliance member told the DOT it intended to use the Delta slots for nonstop flights between Houston and Haneda. The application also sought five night-time-only slot pairs held by Hawaiian Airlines to serve Haneda from Kona or Honolulu, which United said the Honolulu-based carrier was not using. United intended to use the Hawaiian slots, if granted, to operate between Guam and the close-in Tokyo airport. "Awarding these unused frequencies to United will ensure that these underutilised Haneda slot pairs are finally put to their highest and best use," United said. "While Delta is, and Hawaiian may be, unwilling or unable to fully utilise Haneda assets, United is so unwavering in its commitment to ensure effective use of these limited entry route rights that it is prepared to launch these new Haneda slots as quickly as December 1, 2023 after a final award from the Department." Delta gave up seven slot pairs after deciding not to launch nonstop flights from Portland to Haneda.
