October 13th 2023
Australia's International Air Services Commission (IASC) has requested Qantas provide more detail in its application to operate Australia-Indonesia code-sharing with Garuda Indonesia. Read More » The IASC, which oversees distribution of Australia's international traffic rights, has asked Qantas to detail the benefits of the codeshare for customers, trade and tourism. In September, Qantas applied to the IASC for permission for Garuda to add its GA airline code on Qantas flights between Australia and Indonesia from October 29, or as soon as all necessary approvals were received. The IASC received two submissions in response to the Qantas application, including one from Virgin Australia (VA) that raised competition concerns. The changes proposed in this application could lead to an unwarranted increase in the market dominance of Qantas and Garuda on these routes which would be to the detriment of the travelling public, VA said in its submission. It also noted Qantas, its LCC subsidiary Jetstar, and Garuda flew 75% of all passengers between the two countries in the 12 months to April 2023. The remaining flights were operated Batik Air and Indonesia Air Asia.
