Japan clears Korean Air-Asiana Airlines merger

Read More » The ruling concluded a process commenced in January 2021 after KAL submitted its application for the merger to the JFTC. The Japanese agency identified Korea-Japan routes where the combined market share of KAL, Asiana Airlines and subsidiaries - Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul - would limit competition, it said. As a result, KAL surrendered a limited number of slots on seven routes: Seoul to Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya and Fukuoka as well as Busan to Osaka, Sapporo and Fukuoka. To date, KAL has received approvals for the merger with Asiana from 12 competition authorities. The SkyTeam carrier is in dialogue with the remaining authorities, the European Union and U.S, it said.
