Korean Air-Asiana Airlines merger receives European Commission conditional approval

Korean Air's (KAL) proposed takeover of Asiana Airlines has cleared another hurdle after the European Commission (EC) approved the integration of the airlines but with conditions attached. Read More » To address EC competition concerns, the two carriers must support new South Korean entrant, T'Way Air, on four overlapping passenger routes between South Korea and the European Union: Seoul Incheon to Barcelona, Frankfurt, Paris and Rome. Additionally, Asiana must divest its cargo freighter business. “Korean Air has successfully obtained approval or completed the review process with 13 of the 14 regulatory authorities that require business combination approvals,” KAL said. With the EC go-ahead secured, Korean Air is focused on discussions with the U.S. competition authority to finalise the merger review processes as soon as possible, the airline said.
