Competition regulator reports Australia's domestic air passenger market “stabilising”

In-country air passenger travel appears to be “stabilising” after several years of fluctuations during the pandemic, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in its latest Domestic Airline Competition in Australia report. Read More » Average revenue per passenger, adjusted for inflation, was 13% lower in December 2023 compared with the same month in 2022 and 1.4% below pre-pandemic numbers. But the best discount economy fares were still higher than COVID-19 prices, the ACCC said. As well, cancellation rates and delays remained higher than long-term industry averages, it said. “The persistently high rates of cancellations and delays, compared with long-term averages, in the second half of last year were clearly disappointing for consumers,” ACCC chair, Gina Cass-Gottlieb, said.
