Australia's domestic punctuality improves; Regional Airlines best performer

Australia's domestic airlines improved their on-time performance and cancellation rates in January, ending four consecutive months of deteriorating punctually and increased cancellations. Read More » The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said in its monthly report, which covers Bonza, Jetstar, Qantas, Rex, Skytrans and Virgin Australia, that 73.4% of all domestic flights arrived within 15 minutes of their published schedule in January, 9.8 percentage points higher than 63.6% in December. On-time departures rose 9 percentage points, to 74.2%. It was the first month-on-month improvement since August 2023. The cancellation rate fell to 3.1%, from 5% in December. BITRE said the punctuality of arrivals and departures and the cancellation rates were “significantly lower than the long-term average performance for all routes” for the month. Regional Airlines (Rex) had the best on-time arrival rate at 82% with regional operator, Skytrans, the lowest at 65.4%. Virgin Australia recorded the most cancellations, at 5.4%, and Rex the lowest (0.6%).
