March 11th 2024
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said cargo tonne kilometres (CTK), a measure of demand, rose 18.4% in January compared with the same month in 2023. Read More » The result was the highest annual growth in CTKs since the 2021 northern hemisphere summer, the airline lobby group said. Capacity, or available cargo tonne kilometres (ACTK), was higher by 14.6% year-on-year. “This is a strong start to the year,” IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. “In particular, the booming e-commerce sector is continuing to help air cargo demand trend above growth in both trade and production since the final quarter of 2023. The counterweight to this good news is uncertainty about how China’s economic slowdown will unfold.” The Asia-Pacific recorded CTK growth of 24.6% in January, runner-up to the Middle East with a 25.9% expansion. IATA covers six regions worldwide in its monthly traffic reports.
