Australia's domestic punctuality dips in February; Rex records lowest cancellation rate

Australia's domestic airlines went backwards in punctuality and reliability in February, with on-time arrivals lower than the previous month and cancellation rates rising. Read More » The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said in its monthly numbers for Bonza, Jetstar, Qantas, Rex, Skytrans and Virgin Australia. Around73% of all domestic flights arrived within 15 minutes of their published schedule during the month, down 0.4 percentage points from 73.4% in January. The cancellation rate rose to 4% in the 29 days, from 3.1% in January. The one positive was on-time departures improved for the second consecutive month, rising 0.3 percentage points to 74.5%. BITRE said punctuality of arrivals and departures were “significantly lower than the long-term average performance for all routes” in February. “The rate of cancellations was higher than the long-term average of 2.2%,” BITRE said. Australia’s newest and smallest domestic carrier, Bonza, bested all airlines with an on-time arrival and on-time departure rates of 81.7%. Regional Airlines (Rex) had the lowest cancellation rate at 2.1%.
