Air New Zealand orders nine million litres of SAF from Neste
April 17th 2024
Air New Zealand (Air NZ) has placed an order with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) manufacturer, Finland-headquartered Neste, for nine million litres of SAF with deliveries scheduled from this month to next November. Read More » The SAF will be blended with conventional jet fuel and distributed from Los Angeles International Airport. “Currently, Sustainable Aviation Fuel is the only solution that can significantly reduce emissions from long-haul flights, but it is less than 1% of global fuel supply,” Air NZ chair, Dame Therese Walsh, said. “For aviation to reach its net zero carbon emissions goal by 2050, the SAF industry needs to scale up significantly. While the SAF supply is small compared with the airline’s overall fuel use, it is nine times the amount of Air New Zealand's first shipment of SAF from Neste in 2022. It demonstrates the growing cooperation between two like-minded organisations to advance the supply and use of SAF.” The Star Alliance member’s fuel uptake from April to November is calculated at 850 million litres.
