IndiGo to acquire 100 plus regional airplanes to serve second tier destinations
May 16th 2024
India’s IndiGo is discussing an order for 100 or more regional aircraft with ATR, Embraer and Airbus after setting its sights on expanding reach to smaller population destinations, The Economic Times reports. Read More » It has been speculated ATR is IndiGo’s favoured contender because the airline operates 45 78-seater ATR-72 planes and has another five of the type to be delivered by year-end. Other contenders for the order are the A220 and the Embraer E175. IndiGo holds 60% of India’s domestic market share and sees opportunities for increasing its passenger pie in centres of smaller populations across the country. It is forecast demand in non-metropolitan regions will surge due to improved airport infrastructure and the government’s Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme. UDAN aims to develop and incentivize regional air connectivity.
