Australia's domestic airfares remain elevated in May

Australia's domestic air travellers flying on restricted economy or business class fares were paying significantly more to fly around the country this month compared with a year ago, government figures show. Read More » The monthly index of domestic air fares from Australia’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said its measure of “restricted economy” fares had risen 6.9 index points, or 8.6%, in the 12 months to May. The “business class” index was up 6.3 index points, or 11.5%. The one bright spot in the monthly data was in the "best discount" economy category, which fell seven index points, or 11%, in the month.
