Greater Bay Airlines tightens seatbelt rule
June 3rd 2024
Hong Kong’s newest carrier, Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) has ruled passengers must fasten their seatbelts during all flights aboard GBA aircraft even if the seatbelt sign is off. Read More » GBA said the new rule is a precautionary measure to enhance the safety awareness of passengers. “Some recent flight incidents at individual airlines suggest fastening seatbelts [throughout a flight] is an effective way to protect passengers, especially in unpredictable or severe weather conditions, such as convectively induced turbulence and clear air turbulence (CAT) ,” GBA said. “Passengers will still be free to use the toilet when the seatbelt sign is off.” Last month, a Singapore Airlines 777-300ER, flying from London to Singapore, was forced to divert to Bangkok after the aircraft encountered CAT that resulted in scores of passengers and some crew aboard the flight being injured. Tragically, a 73-year-old male passenger on the flight suffered a fatal heart attack during the CAT incident.
