Asian carriers report robust air cargo growth; await impact of U.S. election on sector

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in its latest global air cargo report, said Asia-Pacific airlines posted an 11.7% increase year-on-year in cargo tonne kilometers for September and that available cargo tonne kilometers increased 5% year-on-year. Read More » Globally, total demand rose by 9.4% compared with September 2023 for the 14th consecutive month of growth. Capacity increased by 6.4% compared with a year ago with international delivering the best performance, at 8.1% better than 12 months ago. International belly capacity rose 10.3%, extending a run of double digit annual capacity growth to 41 consecutive months. “September’s performance brought more good news for air cargo markets. With 9.4% year-on-year growth, cargo volumes continued to mark all-time highs for demand. Yields are improving, up 11.7% over 2023 and 50% above 2019 levels, pointing to a strong finish for the year. Longer term, the air cargo world will closely follow the outcome of the U.S. election to determine how U.S. trade policy will evolve,” IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said.
