Aircraft lease extensions have gained in popularity in 2025, Falko reports in its second quarter Portfolio Activity data. Read More » “The persistent trend of airlines extending leases continued in the second quarter of the year with 20 extensions, increasing their number [with Falko] in interim 2025 to 48. “As well as extension volumes being considerably higher than in past years, customers are committing to longer lease terms and raised lease rates to lock in capacity due to the limited availability of aircraft they require to service their networks,” the report said. “This is a common theme observed across all jurisdictions and not confined to one region,” Falko chief commercial officer, Mark Hughes, said. “In the past three months, we had three times more lease extensions than in 2024,” Falko commercial analyst, Tim Chun-hing Li, said. Similarly, SMBC Aviation Capital, in a recent analysis, said “aircraft extensions are extremely popular, running to 80% versus the more typical 50% rate of pre-COVID. Airlines are locking in extensions further in advance [than in the past] as multiple airlines need more aircraft. This reduced supply of used aircraft is maintaining upward pressure on lease rates”.
