Air India fatal crash report released

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) preliminary report into the crash of Air India flight AI171 said the aircraft’s flight data recorders show the fuel control switches on the 787-8 were switched to "cut-off" position shortly after takeoff, stopping fuel from being delivered to the twin aisle’s engines. Read More » The report, published on July 12, said one pilot questioned the other about the fuel control switches. "In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other [pilot] why did he cut off," the AAIB report said. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so."Flight AI171, operated by 787-8 registration VT-ANB, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12. There was one survivor among the 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. Several civilians on the ground also were killed when the aircraft smashed into a medical school canteen where staff and students were at lunch. Following the report’s release, Air India said it is working with all stakeholders, including regulators, and continued to "fully cooperate" with the AAIB and other authorities on the ongoing investigation. "Given the active nature of the investigation, we are unable to comment on specific details and refer all such enquiries to the AAIB," an Air India statement said.
