Korean Air (KAL) and Delta Air Lines, partners in a trans-Pacific joint venture, have begun International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) on their Seoul-Atlanta rotation. Read More » With IRBS, checked baggage is X-ray screened at departure in South Korea where the images are securely transmitted to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for remote review before the ex-Seoul flight arrives, eliminating the need for passengers to collect and recheck bags after arrival in the U.S. The technology will reduce connection times by approximately 20 minutes and remove one of the most stressful parts of international travel, the airlines said. They added the benefit applies to non-stop Seoul-Atlanta passengers an air travellers starting their journeys in other cities and connecting via Seoul. With nearly 300,000 passengers flying this route each year, IRBS is expected to have a significant impact especially as more than half of these passengers connect to onward flights via Atlanta. In 2024, 67,000 of KAL’s 123,000 passengers and more than 100,000 of 160,000 Delta passengers transited through Atlanta.
